A Note from the Past — and a New Beginning

Some of you may remember this blog from an earlier chapter of London nightlife. It's been a while.

I'm James WJ Wilson. I published London nightlife coverage here before time in Budapest and the pandemic took life in other directions. Now I'm back in London and revisiting these pages.

I don't want the old material simply to disappear into the internet's attic. Its dates and writer credits will stay in place.

This is an independent archive of the Café de Paris era: nights out, music and memories of a changing city. I'd like to add occasional recollections and follow worthwhile contemporary connections. It is not an official venue news or booking service; older event details belong to their publication dates.

If you remember those years, I'd be interested to hear what has stayed with you.

Changes to Coventry Street near Piccadilly Circus

Cafe de Paris is not quite as ancient as Coventry Street or Piccadilly Circus or Trafalgar Square but it is forever changing. Of course Coventry Street is changing too and with a new Bulgarian restaurant taking the place of the iconic American restaurant TGI Friday the fact is times are a changing (as Bob Dylan would put it).

Personally I love eastern European food. I have lived in the wonderful city of Budapest in Hungary for a number of years in my life so it is great for me.

As we are constantly trying to review our London guide we have recently update the Coventry Street page of our London guide along with the pages for Princes Arcade off nearby Piccadilly.

London clubs are ever changing and Cafe de Paris London, despite its longevity is always changing.

The result. A fresh experience everytime you visit the London clubs more legendary than most. We recently named Cafe de Paris as one of the best clubs since the millenium and it also features in our list of the best current clubs.

There are exciting times ahead for Cafe de Paris no matter what you know about the best London nightlife. Leicester Square has been an iconic destination for people enjoying a trip to London for a century and that isn't going to change any time soon. Being close to Soho, Covent Garden, and Mayfair it is so central it is no surprise it retains that status.

Hallowe'en At London Cafe de Paris

On Wednesday 29th October, the Cafe de Paris will be hosting a Hallowe'en party with the UK's Number 1 Michael Jackson tribute.

There will also be fire performers, and a free prize draw including paintballing, go-karting, dinner for two and much more.

This Saturday 24th October, Cafe de Paris is hosting its next Zodiac party - this time for Libra.

X Factor Contestant Leaves Cafe De Paris

Gossip merchants are saying that former X factor celebrity Diana Vickers got fruity last night as she left top VIP London club Cafe de Paris...

Apparently she got up close and personal with a man and a giant banana while wearing a short silver sparkly dress.

Diana, 18, was then cornered by the mystery man as she clambered into the back of a taxi with the huge banana on the seat next to her.

We hope he was telling her the whole fruit, and nothing but the fruit...

Wam Bam Club at the Cafe de Paris

This Saturday 26th September, the Wam Bam Club at the Cafe de Paris will be presenting a variety cabaret night of comedy and burlesque.

The acts include Dinah Might, Ali Cook, the Wam Bam Belles, Phil Burgers and Scales of the Unexpected. Glamourous compere Lady Alex will be introducing the acts and providing entertainment between acts.

London's legendary VIP Soho nightclub Cafe de Paris is spearheading a revival of the dinner and cabaret club night.

The Wam Bam Club is compered by Amazonian Lady Alex, who offers a mixed bag of entertainment including vaudeville and burlesque. The club also offers free burlesque taster classes for those wanting to give it a go before shows at 6.00pm and 6.30pm.

Cafe De Paris Announced As 2009 European Sponsorship Awards

Top VIP London venue Café de Paris has been announced as the location for the 2009 European Sponsorship Awards.

Entries for the awards are due in this Friday, September 25, and the prize ceremony will take place on November 25.

“The past year has been an interesting time for the industry, with many exciting campaigns defying the credit–crunch doom and gloom, and proving that good sponsorship works,” said ESA Chairman Karen Earl. “I am looking forward to seeing campaigns from culture, sport, entertainment, media and corporate social responsibility go head-to-head, in a bid to be crowned the best in their field."

Love Live Music At The Cafe De Paris

Beverley Knight is to launch Smooth Radio’s new series of live events, Love Live Music at the London's Cafe de Paris on September 21.

Tickets for the free gigs will be available to listeners through on-air and online competitions. The Independent is partnering with Smooth Radio for the initiative and will be offering tickets through its Reader’s Club.

Cafe de Paris Wig Party

HIV charity Crusaid is staging its annual wig party at London's Café de Paris on 11 October. Proceeds from the event, which last year raised £40,000, will go towards the charity's Point of Light project in Zambia, which helps children affected by HIV and Aids.

Baby Spice Asked To Leave Night Club After She Was Caught Smoking in Cafe de Paris

Celebrity Emma Bunton was asked to leave a nightclub after flouting the U.K. smoking ban.

The 32-year-old Spice Girl sneakily sparked up a cigarette - which is illegal in enclosed public places throughout Great Britain - with her friend while partying at London's Café de Paris club recently, but got caught out by an eagle-eyed security guard.

A source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "Emma and her friend tried to hide their cigarettes under the table but one of the security men spotted the smoke and asked them to leave.

"Emma turned bright red and held her face in her hands. She looked mortified and kept saying, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It won't happen again. I promise.'"

Verne Troyer loves English women. The "Austin Powers" star - who recently competed in U.K. reality TV show "Celebrity Big Brother" - revealed his penchant for British beauties when partying at London's Cafe de Paris on Saturday.

After winking at the crowds of eager ladies, Verne - who stands at 2ft 8in tall - said: "Wow, the ladies in England are awesome."

The 40-year-old actor then expressed a preference for a certain type of lady, demanding "more blond girls with big boobs."
